The Zapata’s came yesterday and brought dinner! The Lord CONTINUES to be gracious to our family through meals. They stayed talked, watched a little football with us, and watched the debut of our short film…”The Last Pop Tart”. That will posted soon in the video section.
The Tillman’s surprised us with a visit today. We talked a for a couple hours..just got caught up. Deanne really encouraged Rhonda, I said some awkward things..I have no idea why – so no thing has changed! Anyway I love Jeremy, Deanne and E (the baby) who just turned 1! He played with the kids and offered me some his snacks. What was really cute was he would crush up the snacks and then offer them to me. I guess he thought it was better that way! Deanne also gave Rhonda a baby wrap…she wasn’t able to try it on so I had to do what I had to do!
So this is getting a little out of hand. We were not going to make Thanksgiving and didn’t ask anyone for a meal either. The kids old therapist Mrs. Carol and her husband decided to bring us Thanksgiving dinner a day before Thanksgiving. God is so so good. The food was great. We had a chance to fellowship and they prayed over us. They blessed the house and asked God to help us be a lighthouse in the community. I love that picture that develops in my mind when I think about that.
Here a short video of the kids thanking the Carol family just before Thanksgiving dinner. And pictures from games we played before the meal.
Just before the Carol’s came over we decided to make our rounds handing pies in the neighborhood. We had a chance to spend time with the Baum’s, St. Pierre’s, and Sipes’. Great conversation and awesome people. They were all saying they were supposed to bring us pie – in the words of one of my favorite Christian rappers Tedashii – everything’s in reverse. In God’s kingdom things are often in reverse.
Today was another incredible day of God blessing our family. The Bryant’s brought us a wonderful meal. I went to the grocery store on yesterday and among those items I brought ingredients for jambalaya. Well let’s just say I’m going to wait several weeks to make it because Mrs. Bryant bought one that had all kind of goodness inside. All I had a chance to do was snap a shot of the left overs cause the kids ate it up pretty fast. Letting me know to pump the brakes on my jambalaya!
Also we were expecting some frozen meals from our church family at Harvester. Toni Lynch spent time coordinating several meals from here life group. God bless her! She has also been so kind to our family. We hadn’t found a time to sync and get the meals from her. Marcus and Anne Pearson decided to step in again! They brought the meals and dinner for Tuesday night. Here’s the dinner Anne made. The Roast had peppers which gave it a nice kick. Marcus and I also chatted for while about church stuff. That man is a well spring of knowledge! I’m looking forward to our next convo.
Here are the meals from Harvester..chicken pot pie, cowboy casserole, and some other meals!
Laurie Dunn has been so sweet to our family. There are gracious acts of love and kindness which I don’t think we are allowed to share but it’s something that can only be compelled by a loving God. I wish I could say because unfortunately I don’t think that captures it all… Anyway she has blessed our family again with her kinds words and a gift card. Thank you Laurie. We are praying a blessing to you and your son.
Maple is finally finished! God is good. Happy the rehab is complete..in time for babies arrival. Excited about that and how God is going to love on us and through us. I need it, my family needs it, and this city needs it..God’s is love.
Mrs. Cutshall and her daughter paid us a surprise visit yesterday evening. I love that woman and her family! I love super transparent people…people willing to share their dark hearts lol!
She had just spent time with a Ferguson panel which included Dr. Bernice King. Mrs. Cutshall had so much to share and Rhonda and I were excited to hear. She shared how the panel had a strong message of loving people. And how most of the people who discussed strategic change for the community agreed it started with an inner transformation. According to Mrs. Cutshall people where attributing the change to the philosophies of Dr. Martin Luther King. At the end she told Mrs. King the model sounded a lot like what Jesus calls us to do..Mrs. King spilled the beans and said this is exactly what she is getting at. However Mrs. King and some of the panel members wouldn’t go as far as to say that in the public forum. I wish they would’ve; only because there are several times I wish I would have.
Later in the panel they talked about inequality and the have nots of the black community. And stated policies should be put in place to help the black struggle. Education of Social Issues, Schooling, and Policy Change is the answer they said. Mrs. Cutshall is a middle aged white woman from the suburbs. She told me she was starting to struggle and started to feel like a “white bigot”. I don’t think she is and I don’t believe she feels she is but she felt like if she shared a contrary view that would be the immediate thought of who she was. She did share a comment that didn’t agree with the panel and I don’t exactly recall her comment but I know she was struggling with how resolving inequality would solve the problem. She even stated how Jesus said the poor would always be among you. She didn’t understand how more education in school or of social issues would lead to lasting change. And I am certain that wasn’t a hateful, cruel, never walked a mile in their shoes kind of thought. She wanted to focus on how through loving people can we solve this problem. Her and I talked and I think agreed this change can only come from God and His Spirit. Real change of the human heart – the kind of change the panel members who where once thugs and thieves, now legislators and police officers does not come from government, policies, or more education. These things are good but don’t get to the heart of the issue. Like Paul says in Romans, the law simply reveals what was in my heart already (paraphrase) and more laws and education of social issues would do more of the same. This is a mission for the church. There are literally 20+ churches within a 5-6 mile radius of me. Most of which declare missional mindedness based on name of the church. Warning “Judgmental Thought Ahead” – I would question the impact these churches are having on the community. What I plan to do as not to be a hypocrite is a conversation for another day..I will say I shared my desire for Harvester to join in the work we are doing here with Mrs. Cutshall and we talked briefly about the role of a event driven suburban church in a neighborhood like this which needs the Gospel and relationships. Mrs. Cutshall didn’t exclude herself though. It was a conversation about the blemishes of our church and her members – those members happen to include her and I. Anyway back to what I was saying…Like Jesus the church MUST step into the hurt, reconcile people to God and to one another, disciple, and send those reconciled people on a mission of love to do the same!
Kids have been watching MasterChef Kids..those little ones can throw down. If you haven’t seen it you should check it out. Let’s me know out of the 10 I have at least one of them should be able to get in the kitchen and throw down! Anyway they decided to cook and here what’s happened!
Marcus and Anne have been so kind to our family. They’ve brought several TIMELY meals. I think I get their general motivation for doing it (they love Jesus) but I would like to know full scope of their heart…why more than one meal? Doesn’t one fulfill the Christian obligation. Anne continues to bring meals. Honestly I think what I want to hear is acknowledgement – they are bona fide missionaries. And if real missionaries acknowledge what we are doing as missional or at least acknowledge that we are somewhere in that lane then I am satisfied. As I write this out I realize how sad that sounds. I believe they are doing this because they love Jesus and they want to support His people…regardless if some of the reason is an investment in what they think is good kingdom work I need to be satisfied with the work God has given me. And realize that regardless of how people perceive the work it’s an assignment from God…and that is enough.
The meal was really good though. Mexican Lasagna with cornbread. Anne is a small lady but boy is she a fierce cook! God is Love. Thank you Marcus and Anne for reminding me.
